Disability Awareness & The Evin B. Hartsell Act

Melisa Hartsell — Co-Founder & President, Evin B. Hartsell Foundation Inc.

In this powerful Xraised interview, Melisa Hartsell—Co-Founder and President of the Evin B. Hartsell Foundation—shares how her late son’s resilience and vision continue to shape education, advocacy, and systemic change.

Inspired by Evin’s book Abled in a Disabled World, the Foundation has grown into a national leader in disability awareness education, creating scholarships, children’s books, and university curricula. Most recently, its work led to the passing of the Evin B. Hartsell Act, signed into Florida law in 2025, which mandates disability history and awareness education across all K–12 schools. Melisa also reflects on her work as a transformational life coach helping families navigate grief and trauma, while inviting supporters to help expand the Foundation’s impact.
