From Stories to Action: Teaching Kids to Care for Our Planet | Sylvia Medina
Sylvia Medina — President, Green Kids Club
In her first XRAISED episode, Sylvia Medina, President of Green Kids Club, shares how environmental education can begin with something as simple and powerful as a story.
An environmental engineer, entrepreneur, author, and conservation advocate, Sylvia explains how an encounter with an orphaned and injured baby elephant in Botswana inspired her to create Green Kids Club’s Environmental Hero Stories. Through books featuring endangered animals, real conservation stories, science sections, photographs, and the organizations working to protect these species, she helps children understand both the challenges facing wildlife and the ways they can make a difference.
The conversation also explores Green Kids Club’s partnership with Evertreen and how tree planting adds a real-world dimension to the lessons found in Sylvia’s books. From providing shade and shelter for wildlife to supporting entire ecosystems, trees play a vital role in the relationship between animals, people, and the environment.
Sylvia discusses her vision for expanding the partnership, including opportunities to involve children directly through tree-planting activities, fundraising initiatives, and projects connecting children at home with trees being planted in places such as Africa. She also highlights the work of Love the Wild Foundation, Green Kids Club’s nonprofit arm, including its support for a village in Kenya and local children already taking part in tree-planting efforts.
At the heart of the conversation is a simple idea: when children understand the connection between animals, plants, people, and their environment, a story can become a conversation—and a conversation can become action.
